At St Barnabas, Art is all about creativity, self-expression, and exploration. We are also lucky enough to have our very own Artist in Residence. We encourage children to experiment with different materials, techniques, and styles as they learn about famous artists and cultures from around the world. Through drawing, painting, sculpture, and more, pupils develop their skills and confidence while expressing their own ideas. Art is a valued part of our curriculum and a wonderful way for children to celebrate their individuality and imagination.
Artist in Residence: Sue Guthrie
We’re delighted to have Sue Guthrie as our artist in residence at St Barnabas. Sue has a wealth of experience working in primary schools and brings fantastic creativity and passion to our school community.
During her time with us, Sue leads guided drawing and painting sessions, helping children build confidence and develop their artistic skills. Pupils also have the exciting opportunity to work on school displays and murals, allowing them to showcase their creativity and leave a lasting mark on our school environment.
Sue’s work inspires our children and enriches their learning through art in a fun, meaningful way.

At St Barnabas, our Art curriculum is an amalgamation of the CUSP curriculum and working with our artist in residence. Each block focuses on a specific area of art, such as drawing, painting, printmaking, textiles, 3D art, and collage.
As your child moves through school, they will revisit these art skills again and again, with new challenges each time to help them grow and improve.
The curriculum also focuses on helping children develop as confident and creative artists. Each part of the program builds important skills, helping teachers track how your child is progressing and enjoying their artistic journey.
A key part of the curriculum is helping children develop their speaking and vocabulary skills, so they can talk confidently about their own art and appreciate the work of others.
