What is our extracurricular provision for pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)?

We make reasonable adjustments to ensure that pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) are fully included and able to participate alongside their peers.

Our starting point is that all pupils, including those with SEND, are encouraged to participate in extracurricular activities. Access is arranged on a case-by-case basis. We implement reasonable adjustments and provide additional support where this is practicable and safe, in accordance with required risk assessments and in collaboration with parents, the pupil, and appropriate professionals.

Subject to individual needs and risk assessment, pupils with SEND can access, with reasonable adjustments where needed, including but not limited to:
    • Before- and after-school clubs
    • Lunchtime clubs
    • School performances and workshops

We consider requests for participation in other activities on a case-by-case basis, in partnership with parents, the pupil, and relevant professionals.

Examples of adjustments may include additional adult support, adapted equipment or rules, visual schedules, reduced timings, quiet spaces, or alternative transport arrangements.

In a small number of cases, a particular activity may not be suitable at a specific time due to a pupil’s complex needs. When this happens, we will agree on appropriate alternatives or a phased plan to work towards participation in the future.

We also believe it is important that all children, regardless of need, have the chance to take on roles of responsibility within the school. Pupils with SEND are encouraged to participate in leadership roles such as becoming a School Council Representative or an Ethos Committee Representative.

Further details on how we promote inclusivity in accessing the curriculum, the physical environment, and communication with parents and visitors can be found in our Accessibility Plan, available on our school website.

Our principle is that no child should be treated less favourably than their peers, and we are dedicated to ensuring that every child has equal access to the broad range of opportunities that St Barnabas offers.
