    Reading

At our school, we use CUSP to teach reading. Each year group has a special set of key books that they will explore in depth over the year. These carefully chosen books are our promise to every child – a collection of stories, poems, and texts that they will enjoy and learn from during their time with us.

The texts are planned so that children experience a wide range of authors, themes, and ideas as they move through school. Alongside these books, each year group also studies a selection of poems in detail. Children will also dip into other texts as part of their wider curriculum learning.

This “literature spine” gives children a strong foundation in reading and has been thoughtfully linked with other areas of the curriculum, where it supports and enriches their learning journey.

    Writing

The National Curriculum for English aims to help children communicate with confidence and connect with the world around them. Through CUSP English, we want our pupils to learn how to express themselves clearly, purposefully, and with creativity.

In writing, our goal is to give teachers the tools to explicitly teach children the skills and knowledge they need to become successful writers. Writing is made up of many parts – from understanding grammar and punctuation, to planning, drafting, and editing. See the writing outcomes in the document below.
